I walked into a waiting room with twelve empty chairs and one person sitting in the corner. Somehow choosing a seat felt like a tiny social puzzle: too close seems odd, directly opposite seems confrontational, but the farthest chair also makes a statement. Why do we act as though there's an unwritten map of acceptable distances? I wonder whether people in different cultures would naturally pick different spots.
