Deciding whether a better grinder matters more than replacing a basic brewer

I have a basic pour-over cone and a cheap grinder that produces a mix of powder and chunky bits. The temptation is to buy a fancy brewer because it looks like the exciting upgrade, but uneven grinding seems a more plausible cause of the bitterness I keep tasting. If you had one modest upgrade budget, would you prioritize a more consistent grinder and keep the plastic dripper? I'd rather make better coffee than acquire another beautiful object.

Yep. A cheap cone can make good coffee if the grind is consistent enough, but a bad grinder keeps dragging everything around.

I mostly agree, though I’d say the biggest win is whatever lets you control one variable at a time. The brewer can wait if the grind is all over the place.

I’m a little less sure. Some people taste more change from a better dripper than they expect, but the grinder still seems like the safer fir...

I’d keep the plastic dripper until it breaks. It’s not exciting, but it’s not the weak link here.
