Getting fiction back into my brain after months of study reading

I went through a long stretch where almost everything I read was for classes or practical information. When I picked up a novel again, I kept reading it like an assignment: underline, remember details, make progress.

What helped was choosing something short and plotty and deliberately not tracking pages or taking notes. It took a few evenings before reading felt recreational again.

I had not realized how strongly the “purpose” of reading changes the way I pay attention.
