My compact hatchback was perfect when I mostly drove alone. Now there's more family luggage, occasional passengers and some longer weekend trips, and I keep wondering whether I need something bigger. Most weekdays the car still carries one person and a grocery bag. I'm trying to count the actual occasions it feels too small rather than buy space for a hypothetical trip. Has anyone resisted upsizing and found roof storage or smarter packing enough?

I kept my hatchback and bought a roof box. It’s not elegant, but for holidays and one-off family runs it beats hauling a larger car around town every day.
The roof box turns every trip into a tiny puzzle, though. Still better than owning a vehicle that feels like a hallway the rest of the week.

I’d count the trips that actually feel cramped over a couple months, not the imagined ones. If the answer is a handful a year, packing strategy probably wins.
That’s the part people skip. They buy for the one weekend with four adults and three bags, then live with the penalty every school run after that.

If it’s mostly one person on weekdays, I’d resist upsizing unless the awkward trips are happening all the time. Roof storage can solve the rare luggage problem without making every parking spot and fuel stop a little worse.
That’s the tradeoff I see too. Bigger cars make the 5% easier and the 95% more annoying.
