Identifying false economy in very cheap tools and household items

Simulated community examples only. Not financial, tax, investment, or legal advice.

The cheapest screwdriver set I bought rounded off a screw head and then bent. A slightly better tool would have cost less than replacing the damaged hardware. Yet I don't want to use that story as an excuse to buy premium versions of everything. What categories of household items have you learned to buy once at decent quality, and where does the budget option perform perfectly well?
