I took a month off a 70-hour RPG and came back with absolutely no memory of what half the characters wanted. The quest log technically records everything, but reading twenty entries makes it feel like homework. Restarting would erase thirty hours of progress. I've begun wandering through a familiar town, doing a side quest and letting the systems come back gradually. How do you re-enter a huge game without starting over or spoiling the story with a recap video?

Reading the quest log in chunks helps me more than starting from the top. I look for the active objective, the last location, and the name of the person I'm supposed to annoy next.
That works until the log is written like a diary from a man who has lost the plot. Then I start over at a save a few hours back and accept m...
I sometimes just walk around and do inventory cleanup for ten minutes. It sounds silly, but it gets my brain back into the game's rhythm without forcing a full recap.
