Our dates fall in Japan's rainy season, but we still want gardens, neighborhoods and day trips rather than an itinerary made entirely of museums. I'm planning flexible outdoor blocks with indoor alternatives nearby, decent shoes and a light rain jacket. For people who've traveled during prolonged wet weather, what activities remain enjoyable in light rain, and what deserves a genuinely dry day?

Street wandering is better than people think in rainy season. Covered shopping streets, train station areas, small shrines tucked into neighborhoods — those all still work if you’re not trying to do a giant scenic hike. Just don’t build a day around one exposed viewpoint unless you’re okay getting damp.
That’s reassuring. I was imagining we’d spend the whole trip huddling under eaves.
