Following up after an interview when the promised decision date passes

The interviewer said I'd hear back by Friday. It's now Wednesday of the following week and there's been silence. I know hiring decisions get delayed, but I don't want to sound impatient. I'm drafting a brief follow-up thanking them again and asking whether the timeline has changed. Would you mention the original decision date or simply ask for an update? I'm still interested, just trying to plan other interviews.

I’d mention the original date, but lightly. Something like: “You had mentioned a decision by Friday, so I wanted to check whether there’s an updated timeline.” That sounds organized, not pushy.

Yeah, this. If you leave out the date entirely, they may not realize the delay. I’d keep the whole note short so it reads like a check-in, not a complaint.

The date is useful because it frames the ask without drama. I’ve sent versions that add one line about continuing to be interested, and that usually lands fine.

Do you think it helps to mention that I’m planning the rest of my interviews around it, or is that too much detail?
