Deciding whether to upgrade a body when the main frustration is autofocus

I'm tempted by a newer camera body because my current one misses focus when subjects move unpredictably. Static portraits and landscapes look perfectly fine, and the lenses are good. Before spending a large amount, I should probably test whether my autofocus settings and technique are the real bottleneck. How did you decide an upgrade actually solved missed shots rather than merely promising to?
