I'll be away alone on my birthday. I'm not upset about it, but I don't want the day to dissolve into ordinary sightseeing and an early dinner. My current idea is one memorable activity, a nice meal and a call home, without making the whole thing feel like a compulsory celebration. Have you spent a holiday or birthday solo while traveling? What made it feel meaningful rather than just another date in the itinerary?

Agreed. I did a solo birthday in Lisbon and booked a dinner I wouldn’t normally splurge on, then spent the afternoon at a museum I’d been meaning to see anyway.
I like giving the day one anchor activity. It stops the whole thing from turning into “well, I was already here.”
I’d also make the call home at a set time, not as an afterthought. Otherwise it gets squeezed out by random wandering and then somehow the day feels unfinished.
A tiny present to yourself helped me once too, nothing dramatic. Just something I could pack in my bag and remember later.
