Deciding when a day trip deserves an overnight stay

A town we're considering as a day trip is two hours from our base by train. That gives us perhaps five hours there once we factor in breakfast and the return journey. It's enough for the main sights but not much time to wander or enjoy dinner. An overnight stay costs more and means moving luggage. Where's your threshold for turning a day trip into a one-night stop?

Exactly. The place itself can be worth it, but if the schedule makes you count minutes all afternoon, that’s not really relaxing travel anymore.

I use the same test, but with luggage and transport added in. If the day trip includes a lot of back-and-forth, an overnight can actually feel simpler.

I’d also ask whether I’m going there to see one thing or to spend time there. If it’s the second one, I usually stop pretending a day trip is enough.
