We'll move between several cities by train during a two-week trip. Booking every ticket now would secure seats but make each day feel rigid; buying on arrival would keep us free to linger but might cost more or leave poor departure times. I'm planning to reserve the longest, busiest legs and leave shorter regional journeys flexible. How do you choose which transfers deserve a firm booking and which are safe to improvise?

I’d also prebook the first train out of a city if missing it would wreck the day. Everything after that can stay looser if the route has frequent departures.
I used to book every leg and spent half the trip feeling owned by my own itinerary. Now I only lock the ugly ones and let the rest happen when they happen.
Same here. The trick for me is checking whether a missed train would cost just time, or time plus a big price jump.
