Planning for a couple where one person wants nightlife and the other prefers early starts

My partner loves live music and late-night neighborhoods; I naturally wake up early and want quiet mornings. On past trips one of us always ended up tired and grumpy. This time we're considering a few late nights with slow following mornings, plus permission to do separate activities occasionally. How do you plan a trip around different body clocks without turning every day's schedule into a compromise neither person enjoys?
