A newer small car would use noticeably less fuel than my current one, but the insurance quote surprised me. Once I include the higher premium, registration differences and the money tied up in changing cars, the fuel savings look much less impressive. I drive a fairly average amount, mostly city errands. Has anyone built a simple ownership-cost comparison that doesn't pretend they can forecast every repair? I'd like to see the break-even logic before getting distracted by advertised mileage.
