My usual espresso recipe behaves reasonably with regular beans, but the decaf shoots through quickly and tastes thin at the same grinder setting. Going finer helps the flow and sometimes makes the cup harsh. The decaf is a different roast, so I probably shouldn't expect a one-to-one setting. For decaf, do you first adjust grind, dose or yield? I'm mainly trying to get a sweet, balanced evening coffee without wasting half the bag.

I'd start with dose before grinding myself into a corner. If the decaf is running fast and thin, a slightly tighter dose can help without making it taste like you've bitten a pencil.
I usually change yield first when decaf tastes hollow. The cup often needs a little less water more than it needs a dramatic grind change.
Interesting. So would you keep the same extraction time in mind and just pull a shorter shot, or aim for the same drink length but tighter s...
Decaf can be annoying because it already behaves differently before you touch the grinder. I'd make one small change at a time or you'll lose track of what fixed it.
That's the part I struggle with. If I change grind and yield on the same day, I can never tell whether the bean or my impatience won.
