At about four in the afternoon I get hungry enough to buy whatever is nearest the office register. A piece of fruit alone doesn't hold me until dinner; a pastry does, but then I feel sluggish. I'm testing snacks that combine something filling with something I actually look forward to: yogurt and nuts, cheese and crackers, or hummus and carrots. What do you bring that survives a desk drawer or office fridge and genuinely stops the vending-machine visit?

Cheese sticks plus fruit have saved me a lot. It’s easy to stash, easy to eat fast, and it actually buys me enough time to get to dinner.

I keep roasted chickpeas in a jar at work, but I know people either love them or act personally offended by them. Still, they do shut down the vending-machine urge.

Hummus and crackers is solid if you can keep the portions sensible. Too much hummus and suddenly you’ve made a whole lunch instead of a snack.

I’d lean toward snacks with protein and fiber together. Fruit alone never held me, either, so your instinct there makes sense.
