Deciding whether to refinish worn wood floors now or wait until other renovations are done

The hardwood floors are scratched and dull, but we also want to repaint and possibly move some built-in storage next year. Part of me wants to refinish the floors now because we see them every day; another part can already imagine dropping tools onto the fresh finish during renovation. They're worn but not splintering or unsafe. If you've done work in stages, is floor refinishing something you strongly recommend leaving until the dusty, heavy work is finished?

If the floors aren’t failing structurally, I’d treat them like the last thing in the house to get pretty. My experience is that ‘we’ll be careful’ disappears the moment someone has to drag a cabinet across the room.

I’d wait until the dusty work is done. Floor refinishing is one of those jobs that looks amazing for about five minutes and then gets punished by ladders, tools, paint cans, and general chaos.

I’m with you on waiting, but I’d maybe do a deep clean and live with the dull floors until the other projects settle down. Fresh finish + renovation dust is just asking for regret.

Also, if you’re moving built-ins, you may end up changing traffic patterns or exposing patches anyway. I’d want all the heavy work finished before I pay for a finish that can get marked up in week two.
